The top three in La Liga played on Saturday leaving Sunday as a day dominated by the relegation battle in Spain.
Barcelona picked up all three points at Espanyol in the derby thanks to a Lionel Messi penalty.
Atletico Madrid faced the toughest task with a trip to fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao. Costa and Koke were the scorers as they battled for a 2-1 win after going behind to a clever Iker Muniain lobbed finish.
Real Madrid trounced Rayo Vallecano 5-0 with Gareth Bale bagging a brace for himself. Real were bouncing back after two defeats on the trot against Barcelona and Sevilla.
Getafe had a great 3-1 win at Valencia which leaves them in sixteenth position. Valldolid beat Almeria 1-0 in a real relegation ‘six-pointer’. This lifted Valladolid over their opponents and out of the relegation zone on goal difference.
